Prince, a musical giant of more recent vintage, didn’t play his history-making performances to tracks either. Yet the majority of pop and R&B acts do exactly that today.
How come?
Driven by economics, most live performances these days are geared to convenience and profit; so fewer musicians and no-risk shows. Prerecords are dependable. Real playing is risky.
