James Brown never played to a “click” or prerecorded track. Neither did Earth Wind & Fire, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye or any of the greats back in the day. Prince, a musical giant of more recent vintage, didn’t play his history-making performances to tracks either. He regarded it as an affront to the legacy of live music.
Yet the vast majority of pop and RnB acts do exactly that.
How come?
Driven by economics, most live performances these days are geared to convenience and profit; so fewer musicians and no-risk shows. Prerecords are dependable. Real playing is risky. And expensive.
